LinkedIn, the popular networking site for professionals and organizations, is a sensible way of keeping current with people, jobs, organizations and technology without the exhausting effort. Essentially, LinkedIn is a resume that provides links to websites, email and affilliations. Then, it goes a step further and offers a place to maintain a list of people to whom you are connected (a friend, a colleague, a boss, whomever) that are also 'LinkedIn'. This list of people, or your 'network' have their own connections, which then puts you within their extended network. You can have as many or as little connections as you wish. Some participants have as many as 500 connections. Relating to the theory, 'Six degrees of seperation', where it is thought that everyone in the world is connected somehow by who they know, and who knows them - by a mere six tiers of connections, LinkedIn is out to put that theory to the test. I am 'LinkedIn' under the name, Sue Martin Mahar, and often peruse the groups for categories of interest. Recently I searched for any connection to my beloved hometown, Nutley. I was surprised, with it's rich history and resident's devotion, nothing had yet been established. I took it upon myself to create a group on LinkedIn, called 'Nutley Notables' Situated about ten miles outside of New York City, Nutley has been the used for television and movie productions, home to many actors, and visited by countless international travellers. Nutley is a township in northern New Jersey with tree-lined streets, strolling parks, glorious homes and family owned businesses lasting generations. 'Nutley Notables' was a local cable television program created by my media class in Nutley High School in the 1980's. Under the direction of our energetic and enthusiastic teacher, Ms. Tomasina Hyland, we wrote, produced, directed and hosted 'Nutley Notables' on a regular basis. We featured stories of local businesses, olympic atheletes and celebrities that have some connection to Nutley. I am encouraging those with any bond to Nutley to join 'Nutley Notables' on LinkedIn. It is free to join and requires noting of your time, other than what you are willing to devote. |
