They are lovely and festive and traditional, aromatic and memorable. However, real Christmas trees are just not sensible. Cut pine trees are not practical for indoors. They can be fire hazards, drop their needles everywhere and take up valuable living space. The mere fact that they are a disposable part of a month long holiday to which we re arrange our homes and transform our daily life is completely impractical, (not to mention the ecological and conservation issues it raises) and yet, because of tradition, we do it, year after year. And I hate to say it, but, I will, I am not entirely comfortable with the deception of Santa to my children. They expect the honest truth from me. On second thought, there is no better way to bribe young children into good behavior than the threat of being on 'the naughty list'. There is an inarguable gain of parental power. So, alas, I will conform. It is the international, time tested legend of Santa and real Christmas trees, and I would have it no other way. |
